HVAC Troubleshooting Technique
Approved By HVAC Guru
Be All and End All Technique – These HVAC troubleshooting technique is bases on conversation I had with HVAC guru all over United State and my HVAC professor.
I did not seat down and use Einstein’s relativity theory to find this technique and the credited to the 2nd techniques goes to my high school professor.
Every HVAC professor agrees that troubleshooting HVAC is a skill every new tech has to learn. You will learn it from the internet, book or by a co-worker.
I made the mistake of learning and memorize the rule of thumb. I never question it. I thought, the pro use it. It must be correct - wrong. The info is passing down from one tech to another and some, who is stepping outside the box, and is questioning this rule.
So, we need take ac troubleshooting info as opinion until it proving otherwise. We need to be on information diet until it is proving the source is credible or logic said it accurate.
This HVAC troubleshooting technique allows tech to accomplish work within short period of time. These techniques have improves my troubleshooting skill significantly.
If you don’t have specific technique to approve HVAC problems - apply it and see what happen.
By the way, it takes people 30 days to make something new into habit.
So, be conscious of these techniques until its unconscious. Unit it become part of your technique.
The HVACs Pro Unconscious Secret
What is the difference between newbie and pro?
The HVACs guru will always say experience is valuable to become a pro; however, they are unconscious; they have more perspectives than a newbie.
So, they will say; you need to have experience to get better at this. I believe experience is perspective. Experience for HVAC student is hard to get; however, perspective is something you can get.
The difference between newbie and pro is
A pro have different way of seeing that one problem and newbie have one way of see it. What I’m trying to say is; you can have perspective by learning material and experience will require time.
This means that you can learn as much as HVAC troubleshooting material without the need of experience. I believe the best HVAC contractor out there is the one with a lot perspective for one problem. I hope that made sense.
Sorry for my digression, so let’s learn the techniques
Zero Level – Ac Troubleshooting Principle
If you’re unfamiliar with it operation, how can you tell if you have fixed it?
So, know how a piece of HVAC units work before trying to troubleshooting it.
If you don’t understand it, do research and learn. Having a HVAC degree is just the beginning.
The 1st Technique:
Listen to customer complain and know
What The HVAC Problems Is
Knowing the ACTUAL PROBLEM is more than finding specific piece of HVACs that is not working and replacing it. Don’t be a tech that changer parts.
BE THE TECH THAT KNOW THE CAUSE BEHINDE THE SYMPTOM
The symptom is the condenser fan not running and you will need to find the cause (the WHY) the condenser fan not working.
The 2nd Technique:
Use YOUR senses to identify what is working and what is not
By listen, touch, smell and looking at the HVAC unit, you apply the process of elimination.
PROCESS OF ELIMINATION WILL SAVE TIME
HVAC Troubleshooting is logical step by step process by using the process of elimination. You identify the part that is working and move on to the next, to find what is not working. This is somewhat apply the Hopscotch Method to troubleshooting air conditioner unit.
Btw - Don’t Taste Any Part!
The 3rd Technique:
Know What To Expect From HVAC Unit
By connecting a gauge into the discharge and low side, what do you expect the manifold gauge to shows? You will need to know the normal temp and pressure to determine what number is not normal.
You will need to know the normal operation sequence to determine what is not normal for that central ac unit or for that specific part.
The Final Technique:
In HVACR, we have gas, airflow, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, refrigerant cycle, electronic problem.
You will need to understand that
HVAC Unit Operate In Harmony
What happen to the airflow will cause other symptom to appear in other part of the HVAC units. That is why never confuse the symptom with the ACTUAL PROBLEM. This goes back to the 1st techniques.
